World We Dare to Imagine: Part 1
While satisfaction
of the world’s conditions lies solely upon the individual and their subjective idea
of what happiness means, there are ways we can elevate the quality of life for
others and achieve a state of peace that appeals to the majority of the
population – regardless of status or background. I believe one way we can
achieve this state of being is through working to alleviate the universal problem
of homelessness. Having a shelter/home is one of the most basic physiological
needs for human survival, without this (and food, of course), humans are unable
to achieve their own personal goals for self-development and happiness.
I think homeless shelters should be
restructured and work towards providing victims of homelessness with the right
tools necessary to get back on their feet. Victims of homelessness should walk
into these shelters with the intention of turning their life around, rather
than look at it as a permanent safety net. Those affected by homelessness should
walk into these shelters as soon as they are faced with the circumstance and
acknowledge they need assistance. Workers and volunteers at the shelter can work
with those affected and provide a plan that works towards acquiring the basic
physiological needs for survival.
A primary goal of the shelters
should be to work towards building the confidence and psychological well-being
of the victims so they can job hunt effectively and positively. Having the
right mindset and drive is essential in moving from different states of being.
If victims are given a plan with deadlines, a temporary home, food, and
psychological assistance, they can move towards making positive changes in
their lives and ultimately, get a job and be financially secure in supporting themselves.
Hi Shirline,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I think this is a wonderful idea! A next possible step could be to potentially meet with staff members at a local homeless shelter to strategize about what they see as realistic solutions to the cycle of homelessness... kind of like what Jacqueline talks about in her book regarding involving people who are already involved in the community to achieve the most productive outcome! I really like this idea!
Best,
Genevieve
Hi Shirline! Overcoming homelessness is an incredible mission. Not only is it pragmatic in terms of need but also grand in terms of contribution to society. Again, as the saying goes "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime." As a next step you could research about what cities have been successful in fighting homelessness and learn about what they did right. In the future you could perhaps connect homeless shelters around the world to crowdsource the ways to battle it and share resources. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHi Shirline! Living in LA makes me realize the importance of proper treatment towards homeless people in our society. Whenever I am driving around the city, there will always be sheds of homeless people under the highway or next to the alley. I think it is essential that we should not only provide homeless with food, but also teaches them life skills that helps them to earning a living on their own. I enjoyed reading your post and agreed with your idea of helping them fundamentally. You can research on some of the existing LA city polices on helping the homeless people and I hope you will find my advice helpful!
ReplyDeleteHi Shirline! I love how you took into consideration people’s most basic needs when coming up with solutions to changing the world for the better. Without the most fundamental needs of shelter and food, people cannot function properly on a physiological level. Great job on breaking down the steps you want to take in re-creating homeless shelters on a universal level! This was so creative of you and I truly think these new and improved shelters can help make a big difference towards the input of homeless people in society. Something you can do to further conceptualize these new-and-improved shelters is to outline the specific steps in creating these shelters into existence. Great job!!!
