    Marketing Intern
Growing up, my career aspirations were constantly changing. My interest went from law to health to finally, business. Thanks to multiple personality tests provided by Organizational Behavior and Leadership, I discovered that marketing would be the ideal subset of business for me to pursue. My first marketing internship at a start-up called FilmFish removed what little doubt I had.

As a marketing intern, my sole purpose was making sure I ordered the right coffee for my managers. Just kidding. A typical day at my internship consisted of involvement in different departments of the company – of which included editing, curation, research, outreach, collaboration, and networking.

However, due to time constraints, I will be focusing on three main components of my internship:

Editing
Curation
Outreach

Editing

The creative side of marketing revolves around editing. Various marketing campaigns require editing, these include

Video
Print
Social media

Each campaign requires different tools and knowledge for it to be effective. For example, video campaigns are typically harder and more time sensitive than a print or social media campaign. For video campaigns, I start by researching into the topic that would interest viewers the most and then find movies and clips that match the topic/idea I’m promoting. I move on to writing a rough script of the video and then finding the perfect voice-over for the video. Finally, I begin the editing process by timing, cutting, and clipping the videos so that everything flows harmoniously.

Print campaigns generally require more knowledge of color schemes and graphics. Editing for print campaigns would take a shorter amount of time as I would just work on coordinating the color schemes in the photo and adding the appropriate text. For social media, the focus was on editing the content to keep the audience’s attention. I would pick the most engaging content to post, edit the color scheme a little, and choose a target audience.

Curation

Curation is the act of organizing and gathering data. At my internship, I was responsible for finding movies that would fit one (or several) of the hundreds of categories created. Fast and successful curation was possible through the following:

Vast knowledge of movies
Ability to categorize them properly
Ability to type fast

I would start by logging into the backend of the website and work through a list of movies to categorize. Having prior knowledge of movie plots is a must in order to work through the list quickly and efficiently. I enter in the information and keywords into the film data entry sheet and voila! Curation is complete.

Outreach

Outreach consists of two parts, these are

Market research
Email campaigns

For outreach, I start by conducting market research. We do this by running tests on focus groups and recording the data on spreadsheets. I also gather information from social media accounts through Google Analytics and use that information to personalize email campaigns to specific client groups. Through careful research and analysis, we are able to generate a higher active user count for the website and market it effectively to different client groups. Like a doctor prescribes the right medication for their patient, marketers choose the right marketing method for their clients through tests and analyses.
